Delaware is unique in that most of the Fire, Rescue, EMT, fire prevention services are supported by willing volunteers. Everyday hereos that offer their time and dedication to protecting surrounding communities. Now more than ever they need your help. The New Castle County Emergency Services Corps (ESC) is an AmeriCorps program created as a partnership between New Castle County Government, the New Castle County Volunteer Firefighter's Association, and the YMCA Resource Center of Delaware. Our mission is to increase the safety of our community by supporting its volunteer fire and emergency services.


     Created in 2005 to address the critical staffing needs of volunteer fire companies in New Castle County, the ESC places AmeriCorps members in volunteer fire companies and emergency management agencies where they gain experience in emergency services in efforts to recruit new volunteers.


As an ESC member you will educate the public about the needs of and services provided by the volunteer fire service, recruiting more volunteer fire fighters and helping to retain current volunteers. You will be active in the community educating children about fire safety, teaching first aid and CPR skills to community members, and participating in a wide variety of community events. You will also be trained as a firefighter and have an opportunity to serve alongside other volunteer firefighters on emergency calls. No prior background in emergency services is required.
